At Swarthmore I was taught by two great teachers, the political theorist Roland Pennock, and a student of American government named Chuck Gilbert.
They were very hard nosed, rigorous, serious thinkers, and that excited me – that you can apply some of the rigour of the sciences, where I was coming from, to politics.
Following graduation, he joined the University of Michigan faculty, becoming a full professor of political science in 1975.
In 1979, Robert Putnam moved to Harvard as a professor of government and subsequently served as department chair from 1984 to 1988.
